En juin 1940, après la bataille de Dunkerque et le retrait des troupes alliées vers l'Angleterre, de nombreux bataillons continuent de résister à l'invasion allemande. Le 12 juin 1940, à Saint-Valery-en-Caux, le long des falaises faisant face à la Manche, le 9e corps d'armée français du général Ihler et la 51e division d'infanterie Highland du major-général Fortune sont contraints de se rendre devant la 7e Panzerdivision de Rommel. Beaucoup resteront prisonniers de guerre pendant cinq ans en Pologne.
Saint-Valery-en-Caux représente un moment fort du sacrifice britannique et de l'Auld Alliance franco-écossaise. En ce 80ème anniversaire nous prenons le temps de nous remémorer ces moments. Ce matin, la consule générale Laurence Païs et le Lord Provost d'Edimbourg Frank Ross se sont rendus du consulat général de France jusqu'aux City Chambers d'Édimbourg afin d'y déposer une gerbe en hommage aux hommes tombés et forcés de se rendre face à l'invasion nazie.
In June 1940, many Allied troops fled to England after the battle of Dunkirk, but others were still fighting in France against German invasion. On 12 June 1940, in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, along the cliffs of the English Channel, general Ihler's 9th corps d'armée and the 51st (Highland) Division of major-general Fortune had no choice but to surrender to Rommel's 7th Panzerdivision. Many stayed POWs for the remainder of the war and were transferred to Poland.
Saint-Valery-en-Caux is an important symbol of our Franco-Scottish Auld Alliance and the sacrifice made by many British troops in France during the Second World War. We took time this morning to commemorate the 80th anniversary of this chapter of our common history. Our consul general Laurence Païs and the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Rt. Hon. Frank Ross, marched from the consulate general to Edinburgh's City Chambers where they laid a wreath to remember those who fell and surrendered.
