Around 60 millions sprigs of Lily of the Valley are produced every year in France, making the market worth more than €90 million (around £78 million). The Lily of the Valley is associated with different symbols, including the 13th wedding anniversary called the “noces de muguet”, linked to the tradition that a sprig of Lily of the Valley with 13 bells would bring happiness. Today we will take an interest in the tradition of the 1st of May, a day when we traditionally offer a sprig of Lily of the Valley as a lucky charm, since this flower usually blooms around that date. This tradition is found in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Andorra.
Près de 60 millions brins de muguet sont produits chaque année en France et le marché pèse plus de 90 millions d'euros. Le muguet est associé à différents symboles, dont celle des noces de muguet qui symbolisent les 13 ans de mariage dans le folklore français. En effet, il existe une tradition selon laquelle un brin de muguet à 13 clochettes porterait bonheur. Mais le symbole qui nous intéresse aujourd’hui est la tradition du 1er mai, jour pendant lequel on offre traditionnellement du muguet « porte-bonheur » car il fleurit aux alentours de cette date. Cette tradition est très présente, entre autres, en France, en Suisse, en Belgique et en Andorre.
The symbolism of the return of spring linked to this flower goes back to Celtic traditions and to Roman ceremonies made in honour of the goddess of flowers, Flora.
La symbolique du retour du printemps liée à cette fleur plonge ses racines dans les traditions celtes ainsi que les cérémonies romaines faites à Flora, déesse des fleurs.
Translation: On the first of May 1, 1560, briefly visiting the department of Drôme, King Charles IX was offered a sprig of Lily of the Valley. Pleasantly surprised, he decided to take this tradition over in court the following year offering ladies a sprig of Lily of the Valley as lucky Charm.
The tradition got lost until 1895, when the singer Félix Mayol, arriving in Paris, got offered a bouquet of Lily of the Valley by her friend Jenny Cook. In his memoirs, he tells that he was wearing a sprig of this bouquet on the première of his concert, which was a success and he kept hold of this tradition, maybe reviving the custom.
Cette tradition se perd jusqu'au 1er mai 1895, quand le chansonnier Félix Mayol arrive à Paris et se voir offrir un bouquet de muguet par son amie parisienne Jenny Cook. Dans ses mémoires rapporte qu’il prend un brin de muguet le soir de sa première sur la scène du Concert parisien. La première étant un triomphe, il conserve ce muguet qui devient son emblème et relance peut-être cette coutume.
During the Belle Époque, French fashion designers offer a sprig of Lily of the Valley to their workers and customers. Christian Dior makes the flower the emblem of his fashion house. Since then, the custom of the 1st of May has become a celebration in the Parisian area.
À la Belle Époque, les grands couturiers français offrent le 1er mai un brin de muguet à leurs petites mains et à leurs clientes. Christian Dior en fait l’emblème de sa Maison de couture. Dès lors, cette coutume du 1er mai devient une fête dans la région parisienne.
It is not before the start of the 20th century that it becomes associated with Labour Day, which itself dates back to 1889. Under Pétain’s regime, the flower since then associated with Labour Day, the red Eglantine Rose, is replaced by the Lily of the Valley, as the Eglantine was associated with the left wing in politics.
The sale of Lily of the Valley in the streets of Nantes started a bit after the year 1932 and spread to the whole of France around 1936 with the advent of paid holidays.
Ce n'est qu'au début du xxe siècle qu'il sera associé à la Fête du travail, qui date elle-même de 1889: sous Pétain, la fête des Travailleurs devient la fête du Travail et l'Églantine rouge associée à la gauche, est remplacée par le Muguet.
La vente du muguet dans les rues de Nantes commença peu après 1932 et se répandit ensuite à toute la France aux environs de 1936 avec l'avènement des congés payés.
The sale of Lily of the Valley by private individuals and associations on public roads without authorisation is officially tolerated on the 1st of May. 85% of the national production of Lily of the Valley is harvested in the region of Nantes, the rest in the region of Bordeaux.
La vente sur la voie publique du muguet par les particuliers et les associations sans autorisation est officiellement tolérée le 1er mai. 85 % de la production nationale de muguet est récoltée dans la région nantaise, le reste en provenance de la région de Bordeaux.
